The great spotted woodpecker is mostly black and white with white shoulder patches and red underneath the tail. The Male has a red patch at the back of the head. Historically the great spotted woodpecker bred in Ireland but became extinct as a breeding species during the 17th or 18th Century following the extensive clearance of woodland. They have made an amazing come back over the years. The Chaffinch is the most colourful of all the finches finches in Ireland and the most common. It is generally found in woodland, farmland, parks and gardens around Ireland.
